Allan J. "A.J." Smith

Allan J. “A.J.” Smith, a life-long patron of the performing arts, has served as Confluence Ballet Company’s treasurer since September 2021, and as president since November 2021. During his tenure, Smith has focused on: building a first-rate board of directors; implementing fiscal and organizational discipline; establishing Confluence Ballet as a credible, collaborative and active participant in Pittsburgh’s vibrant arts community; crafting an ambitious and executable long range strategic plan; and, most importantly, creating an environment and culture in which the dancers of Confluence Ballet Company can flourish, realize their vision, achieve their mission, and live their values. Smith brings almost four decades of organizational leadership and management experience, having served in a variety of leadership roles in Pittsburgh’s high-tech manufacturing sector, as well as over 20 years as a commissioned officer in the US Air Force, where he served at the Pentagon, National Security Agency and several other assignments associated with developing new mission capability. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Penn State University, and a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He currently serves on industry advisory boards for Westmoreland County Community College and Pittsburgh Technical College. In the past, he served as a volunteer instructor for A Presidential Classroom for Young Americans.
